LIMITED RELEASE: FRESH HOP
Oh yeah, that’s right… it’s Fresh Hop time! We’re super excited to announce that our very special, seasonal brew of Limited-Edition Fresh Hop IPA, is now available to order online HERE, from Jack Black’s Taproom (on tap too of course), as well as from the list of stockists at the bottom of this post.
Fresh Hop is a beer we truly look forward to brewing each year. It’s a massive passion project for the brewers and a real honour to be able to use fresh hops, straight off the vine from the Hop Farms in George. The hops are used on the same day as the harvest so that our Fresh Hop brew literally could not be any fresher.
This year, our brewing team decided to go with Southern Passion hops, which is one of the most aromatic hops in the hop’s arsenal. Usually, the aroma profile includes passion fruit, melon, litchi and guava but because we went to go get fresh cone hops straight from the farm, other aromas like fresh cut grass, summer rain and earthy tones would also come through.
At Jack Black, innovation is incredibly important to us, after all isn’t that what craft beer is all about. With our Fresh Hop brew our brewers are really able to push boundaries and craft something truly special. Nico du Plessis, Jack Black’s Head Brewer, gave us some insights into this brews’ process;
“This year we decided to keep the malt aroma low on the beer so that the hops could take the shine. This ensured a crisp mouthfeel with a beautiful bitter finish. Hops were added during different stages of the brewing process to ensure maximum utilization, with the majority being added right at the end to ensure maximum hop aroma. We decided to dry-hop with Loral and Simcoe Cryo as well to complement the Southern passion flavours. We are truly happy with how the beer came out and that it still kept a lot of the fresh hop characters you only get with whole cone hops.”
Wowzer, what a beautiful process and now we’re frothing for an ice-cold Fresh Hop too!
